I believe (anecdotal yes, but I'll bet there's actual data available to
support my statement) that many a young mind has been stimulated to learn
about science via the initial route of science fiction and fantasy.  (My own
current interest in the science of paleontology originates many many many
years ago in the realm of science fiction [and just a little fantasy]
reading and movies as a youngster.) I'll dare say I am not alone. :)

It may be unfortunate, but I suspect the only way to initally reach some
young minds is to engage their preoccupation with fluff first (like a lure)
and introduce them to subject matter they might not otherwise have given a
second thought. IMHO
