GPS in DPP
To T.A. Curtis and anyone else who is interested,
With regards to the question about remote sensing in Dinosaur Provincial
Park (DPP), you may want to write to Darren Tanke of the Royal Tyrrell
Museum as he and Dr. Phil Currie have been GPSing quarries there for the
past few summers.
Darren has given several talks on this subject, mainly at the Alberta Paleo
Society's annual meetings, as well as at the SVP conference in Denver. The
project has been quite successful in helping to identify lost or 'mystery'
quarries from when the Sternbergs and Barnum Brown were excavating up there.
I don't believe that Canada has (or had) the same kind of program for remote
sensing that we have here in the states. And I totally agree that giving
the general public GPS coordinates of sites would be disastrous.
Darren used to be a member of the mailing list, but it became so large that
his email system began choking on it so he discontinued receiving it. He
has been having a lot of problems with his email account (the joys of living
in small town Canada - even if you work for one of the world's greatest
dinosaur museums), but you can write to him at his work address
Darren.Tanke@gov.ab.ca. I'm sure he'll be happy to discuss this project
with you.
Have fun,
Patty
