Presents: New Trackways into Maryland's Early
Cretaceous
Featured Speaker: Ray Stanford, Discoverer of Maryland's Early Cretaceous tracks Have you ever wanted to get a close-up look at dinosaur
tracks attributable to a dromeosaur such as Deinonychus that contain clear
evidence
of the 'terrible claw'? Seven such tracks will be shown, including two successive ones and one footprint attributed to a baby dromeosaur. Would you like to see, first-hand, the best of the only pterosaur tracks ever found in all of eastern North America? Recent finds will include two manus/pes (hand/foot) sets, and pes imprints by two distinctly different species of pterosaur. A new 'mother lode' track site north-east of Baltimore, MD, containing Early Cretaceous dinosaur tracks, was explored by Ray and due to his foresight, sauropod, ornithopod, and theropod tracks were rescued just before the site was destroyed by 'stream reclamation' and construction. Have a look at the amazing taphonomy of some of these tracks that almost disappeared forever. Also on display will be the smallest dinosaur tracks ever found anywhere in the Cretaceous, including the smallest theropod (three successive ones) tracks ever found from any age of the Mesozoic. A recently found piece of substrate revealing 22.5 three-toed tracks by five different dinosaurs will be displayed for the first time publicly. Ray will explain special techniques that he uses to aid in finding and interpreting tracks. There will be some other surprises, too! Date: Thursday, April 25, 2002
