I've read in "Big Cats and their fossl relatives" by Alan Turner, that male lions do assist in hunts fairly often, especially when the prey animal is very large and hard to bring down like a Buffalo.  And of course when young males are ejected from the pride they need to hunt at least occasionally to survive until they can take over a pride of their own.  Their shorter manes probably help in this as their prominence in adult males makes it easier for prey to see them.

Does it? I'm under the impression that adult male lions never really hunt for prey, but i don't know how true this is.
