RE: Spinosaur crests & sails
Hi, this may be old news, but you can check out a large image (photo)of the
Irritator challengeri skull!!!!!!, minus that stupidly huge and fake crest,
on the home page of Canadian paleontologist Hans-Dieter Sues!
http://www.zoo.utoronto.ca/sues/pict-page.htm
you have to look closely but you can see that the real crest is quite long
and low. On the specimen of Angaturama limai, which is just the tip of the
snout and likely belongs to the snout less Irritator skull, the crest
extends to the tip of the snout. I believe you can (at least could a few
months ago, i think that particular section is under construction or
something) see a very good life restoration of Irritator/Angaturama done by
DML's very own Jaime A. Headden at the dinosauricon.(at least could a few
months ago, i think that particular section is under construction or
something)
with regards to Spinosaurs swimming, generally all animals are good swimmers
and spinosaurs and indeed all theropods were no exception. It is, however,
unlikely that they went swimming in pursuit of fish in the manner of
crocodiles.
Question? If both taxon prove to be the same animal, which name gets
priority?
Chris
