Re: JPIII: unmitigated rubbish

Mickey Mortimer wrote:Hardly!  As I said previously, the dorsal neural spines of Suchomimus aren't that tall.  They were half the height of JP3's Spinosaurus and peaked over the hips.  The JP Spinosaurus also has fewer dentary teeth than Suchomimus, but is similar to Spinosaurus.  In any case, it is certainly easier to tell than distinguishing Gallimimus from other ornithomimids externally, especially from so far away.  Besides being 30% larger than most other ornithoimimids, only detailed examination of the head or hands would be useful in singling out Gallimimus.

OK, playing devil's advocate here: Tim's guess of Gallimimus was half-lucky: he knew it was an ornithomimid, and said the first one he thought of. Billy's guess of Suchomimus was reasonable since (AFAIK) there is no good material by which he could have identified Spinosaurus by. In addition, he was trying to identify an animal that was trying to eat him. That might have made things more difficult. Maybe he didn't get to see the whole animal as clearly as Grant did.
