I think that Dr. Crichton probably added the poison (but not the frills,
which were an invention of the movie) because he read somewhere that
Dilophosaurus's jaws were rather lightly built and slender.  Well, the
reasoning goes,
if it couldn't have killed an animal with its jaws alone, it must have had
poison or something similar.  This is conjecture, of course, but Dr.
Crichton did the same thing in _The Lost World_ with Carnotaurus, which also
have
rather slender lower mandibles.

Yea, he just didn't look at the TEETH!!! They are very long. And the jaws
aren't that slender.
