Storrs Olson and Xu, Zhao & Wang both gave IVPP V 12330 as the type specimen
of their respective new species: Olson for Archaeoraptor liaoningensis, Xu,
Zhao & Wang for Microraptor zhaoianus. Xu additionally stated, in originally
confirming that a forgery had taken place, that he recognized the tail
portion of Archaeoraptor liaoningensis as being from the counterpart slab of
the small theropod he and colleagues would later describe as Microraptor
zhaoianus. A fairly complete account of the situation prior to the
description of Microraptor appears in the October 2000 National Geographic.
