RE: mass extinctions and DDT
It's titled "Motel of the Mysteries" by David Macaulay. He also authored
(and illustrated all of them): "The Way Things Work" (with lots of friendly
Wooly Mammoths wandering throughout the illustrations); "Castle"; "Pyramid";
"Cathedral"; "City"; "Underground" (this shows fabulous views of a city -
from below, without any of the ground showing -- That would be a great way
to find fossils! [Dinosaur reference! :-) ] ); "Unbuilding" (the sale and
dismantling of the Empire State Building); and "Great Moments in
Architecture" (very funny stuff). [There are more of them, but I don't have
them all - or know all of them off-hand].
Happy New Year!

Mystery Motel has been a favorite of mine for years. The thing that
tickled me the most was how the archaeologists made sooooo many things
religious artifacts.
How'd the archaeologists feel about this, anyway? :)

In times of war, you are obligated to pretend that your leader is a
Great Man, even if he is the village idiot. It has always been so.
