the work of: Donna Haraway, Evelyn Fox Keller, Brian Noble, among
others. My own methodology, in my in-progress book Alfred Russel
Wallace's KING KONG, is to note that paleontology, since Roy
Chapman Andrews's Indiana Jonesian escapes, has been relatively
masculinist.
RELATIVELY macho? Half the "discoveries" in dinosaur
paleontology can be summed up as "New Giant Dinosaur Proves
Paleontologist Has Largest Penis". As much as I enjoy joining the
guys around the campfire for a beer and a session of amicable
masculine grunting (real men don't speak- they grunt), sometimes I
feel sorry for the women in this field- it can't be easy being a woman
in what is, a lot of the time, a great big pissing
contest.
Hi Nick,
Ohhhhh ..... I almost didn't, and then I JUST couldn't resist
playing with this one.
Your sympathy is deeply appreciated and such a kind nature will
surely not go unnoticed by any of us! - but um, I don't hardly ever
feel feel sorry for me at all. =)
FYI - Before I went to Antarctica I (and all the rest of us of a
certain gender) had to learn how to do "it" standing up.
Squatting with your knickers down in winds that will freeze metal to
skin in seconds and hot coffee as it is thrown in the air is not an
option. ;^)
I do concur that.........
It would sometimes appear that as the grunting and the modern
warrior replication of "Me Mighty Paleotologist GOD, You Nothing
But Stupid Compared to Me" pseudo-campfire tale-telling occurs,
during which the verbal version of the reptilian defense mechanism of
projectile urination is sprayed in the general direction of all those
intending to be subordinated, that some of "them" may be way
too busy to notice some of us (the women). THIS is a GOOD thing!
So, Nick! I for one (and I am sure there are others) appreciate
your outspoken concerns but shhhhhhhh......... Keep quiet about us,
OK? (the women with PhD's in this field, and those aspiring to
them).
Nothing like being able to do what you want WHEN you want to,
because nobody is paying any attention to you because you are *gurl*,
'K?! Just SHHHHHH!!!!!!!
Some of usssss, evil gurlssssssss just may intentionally choose
to go off in to placesssssssss where no man has gone before. Lotsss of
*new* fossilssssssss out there.
Merry Christmas!
Merry ___________ for those who do not celebrate the Christian
25th
