Re: "Terror Birds" & WWPB

Dear all,

In one fell swoop I will address a few thoughts brought up recently on list.

About WWPB: yeah, the motion didn't always seem realistic (it was too slow, etc.), but there were shots in which the animals really looked real.  I remember the fast-paced motion shots from When Dinos Roamed America and I cringe.  If speed looks like that, then I'll take slower and prettier any day.  The Australopithecines looked pretty bad, I think.  Not because of any inability to make them look good, however, but because of their hypothesized locomotion. Also, the bodies of Smilodon are different enough that I think it's better that they didn't superimpose Smilodon heads on lion bodies.  The fighting between Half-tooth and its rival didn't look real, however, and they should have studied modern lions' fighting to see how they move.  And those Phorusrachids should have not been portrayed so wimpy.

And the suggestion that the Smilodon could use its canines on either side of the verts of its prey may work for small prey items, but the experiment that I think was mentioned was done on a bison carcass, and verts for prey that size would be too wide for a Smilodon.  Too much of a risk of breakage of the teeth, methinks.

Also, haven't there been two species of "terror birds" with claws: Andalgalornis (species?) and Titanis walleri?

Peace out,
