South American Theropods...of hunting
Yes it's safe to say the large theropods hunted any available sauropods, but
not restricted to such by any means, of course...considering the hadrosaurs,
and if worst came to worst, the armored ornithiscians. Perhaps the bigger
interest here lies in what species, not what families, were possible prey.
Several ideas have been inferred here. Mr. Keesey clarified the timeslots.
Big cats (here I go again paralleling modern fauna with past fauna) are the
most superb hunters of our time, as far as agility and fitness, adaptibility to
prey variety, and other successful eco niche adaptions. Granted a cat can
become used to gazelles. But during dry seasons, which often bring previously
foreign animals to nearby waterholes, available food becomes new food.
I won't hesitate to formulate the acceptable prey forum of any large predator
in any circumstance. Give a mountain lion a bear cub and she won't complain.
Give a bear a choice between huckleberries and a caribou and take a guess. Beef
up the stakes and give a lion an elephant calf. Yes, its not a walk in the
park, but if it is possible, it is edible. End of story.
