It may be that what we are seeing here are the effects of allometry on the
proportions of different sized individuals, which will always exist in a
population.  Within certain size ranges, the proportions of various parts
to themselves change, as well as between sizes of individuals.  Larger
individuals may require larger areas for muscle attachments, so this
difference may be an artifact of that.  Perhaps the more well-versed
anatomists among us can elucidate?
