Re: Nat'l Geographic article on Sue

Hello,

National Geographic has an article on Sue the T. rex on their website.  The URL is:

http://www.ngnews.com/news/2000/05/05182000/sue_13094.asp

This article states that a piece of information paleontologists have learned from Sue is that this T. rex could move at only up to 15 miles per hour, "with a gait like an elephant's."

This makes no sense to me, T. rex did not have elephantine legs at all.  I thought that maybe the writer confused two different measurements; Sue's stride walking was thirteen to fifteen feet, and Sue is over thirteen feet tall (the AMNH type specimen is thirteen feet at the hips, and Sue is definitely taller).

I am planning on writin gto National Geographic to ask them about this, but first I thought to ask here.  Does anyone know why the articles states the speed measurement, and how the scientists gathered that data?  Or if there are any articles in more academic sources?  Or if anyone has any comments or knowledge on the issue as well.

Thanks, Demetrios Vital
