In fact, there seems to be a rather vocal dispute between two camps, 
one putting the origin of snakes with mosasaurs, the other with small 
burrowing lizards and blindsnakes. The dispute seems about as 
polarized as that over the origin of birds. The other side had a 
paper out recently in Nature.  -- Jeff Hecht
