Ankylosaur bellies were indeed armored; see, e.g., picture of Minmi ventral
armor in my old publication Mesozoic Vertebrate Life #1. The ventral
osteoderms were much finer than the dorsal scutes and were almost exclusively
ossicles rather than true keeled scutes.
