PTEROSAUR & THEROPOD NEWS
Met Michael Benton at SVPCA, but of course forgot to ask for a
_Schleromochlus_ reprint. Oh well. The following just in...
WELLNHOFER, P. and BUFFETAUT, E. 1999. Pterosaur remains from the
Cretaceous of Morocco. _Palaontologische Zeitschrift_ 73: 133-142.
Jaw fragments and isolated teeth from the Kem Kem region
(?Cenomanian) include toothless jaw fragments referred tentatively to
pteranodontids, azhdarchids and tapejarids. The latter is
particularly exciting: the first tapejarid from outside of South
America, and another faunal link for Cretaceous Africa-S. America.
The teeth represent various ornithocheiroids.
WELLNHOFER, P. 1998. Urvogel und befiederte Dinosaurier aus China.
_Archaeopteryx_ 16: 131-136.
Won't be new to many of you: is all in German and obviously covers
Wellnhofer's thoughts on _Sinosauropteryx_ and other Liaoning
fossils. An addition at the end covers the (then) breaking news about
_Protarchaeopteryx_ and _Caudipteryx_.
KNOLL, F., BUFETAUT, E. and BULOW, M. 1999. A theropod braincase from
the Jurassic of the Vaches Noires cliffs (Normandy, France):
osteology and palaeoneurology. _Bull. Soc. geol. France_ 170:
103-109.
The braincase (Callovian) differs from other mid Jurassic European
theropods but is something like _Allosaurus_. Discussion of CT
scanning and also covers the idea that the holotype
_Eustreptospondylus_ is a juvenile: something the BBC was apparently
not aware of (their beach-combing, island-hopping
_Eustreptospondylus_ is apparently adult but the size of the
holotype).
Finally, have just received notification of a Dinosaur Society UK
conference: 'Science and the media: bringing dinosaurs to life'.
Happening on 9th October: not enough notice for me, dammit I can't
go. The advertising does not mention a venue.
