Lapparentosaurus
There's something I'm _very_ confused about, and the more I look into it the
more confused I get.
When Bonaparte named _Lapparentosaurus madagascariensis_ did he name it as
an entirely new genus and species:
_Lapparentosaurus madagascariensis_ Bonaparte, 1986
or just a new genus for Lydekker's species _Bothriospondylus
madagascariensis_ making the new combination:
_Lapparentosaurus madagascariensis_ (Lydekker, 1895)
????
I haven't been able to get a hold of Bonaparte's paper, and other sources
seem to suggest different things. For example, McIntosh (1990) seems to
imply that _Bothriospondylus madagascariensis_ was named (by Lydekker) from
an adult specimen from Madagascar, to which some juvenile skeletons (also
from Madagascar) were later referred. Later, in 1986, Bonaparte removed the
juvenile material from _Bothriospondylus_ and erected a whole new genus and
species (_Lapparentosaurus madagascariensis_) for this juvenile material,
leaving the adult specimen as the type of _Bothriospondylus
madagascariensis_.
But other authors give Lydekker's species (based on an adult specimen) as
the type of _Lapparentosaurus_.
I'm confused. Can anybody help?
Tim
