Ephedra is NOT a horsetail relative; it is a member of the possibly
polyphyletic Gnetales (or Chlamydospermae), a "gymnosperm" order which
otherwise includes Gnetum and the weird Welwitschia of south-west Africa.
Therefore it is a seed plant, unlike the horsetails.
