Namibia-Dinasaur Dinasaur Replica for Display in Namibia
Africa News Service 20-JUL-99

WINDHOEK, Namibia (PANA, 07/20/99) - A life-size dinosaur replica,
acquired by the Geological Survey of Namibia from the Albany Museum,
South Africa, is to be flown to Windhoek Friday where it will be
displayed for the first time in Namibia.

The director of the geological lsurvey, Gabi Schneider, said the
objective of displaying the replica will be to educate the public about
how these ancient animals looked when they were alive.

He said geologists discovered the first-ever dinosaur fossil in Namibia
near the top of the Waterberg Platea Park in 1977.

It was identified as Massospondylus, one of the oldest known dinosaurs.
It was a herbivore that measured about six metres in length.

The rocks containing the dinosaur have since been relocated to the
museum of the geological survey in Windhoek, according to Schneider.

The remains of the 200 million year-old skeleton was found by a group of
scientists from Wurzburg, Germany, Liverpool, United Kingdom and
Witwatersrand and South Africa, who were investigating sandstones of the
early Jurassic period.

She added that in full recognition of the importance of the discovery,
as well as the display, Air Namibia had sponsored the transport of the
dinosaur replica from South Africa to Windhoek.
