It's a >lot< less time-consuming to dash off e-mail replies--such as this
one--than it is to prepare a scientific paper, with photographs, figures,
peer-reviewed text, endless revisions, and so forth. These days I am compelled
to spend as little time as possible on nonpaying work, and e-mail gives me the
opportunity to convey a considerable amount of information (or drivel--suit
yourself) per minute spent.
