Paleoworld news (such as it is)

I recently got this message, and since it concerns a FAQ (to use the hip
lingo of the 'Net), I thought I'd pass the reply to the list as well.

>Larry,
>I think I've talked to you about this before.... Anyway, have you heard
>anything regarding the 'lost episodes' of Paleoworld? (actually the 7
or
>8 shows from the 1997 season that were never shown on TLC).

I called them and the customer support people say they have no
information about unaired episodes, and wouldn't refer me on to a
programming person.

The person I spoke to did tell me that five episodes of Paleoworld 4
would be shown in North America during "Dinomania" week, starting May 4:

Loch Ness Secret (groan)
Secrets of Brontosaurus
Baby Monsters (another groan)
Valley of Venom
Dawn of the Dinos

But there's no regularly-scheduled weekly slot that they're admitting to
for '98 for Paleoworld.

So I called New Dominion, producers of Paleoworld, to see if they'd
help me with a straight answer on the other episodes, but I went into
voice mail with the person I was transferred to -- translation: no one
ever wants to talk about anything.

BTW, I discovered on LEXIS that New Dominion is producing a four part
special about dinosaurs for Discovery, first episode of which will air
in late April. One episode will deal at least in part with ceratopsian
stance. Another will break new ground by discussing that taboo subject:
dinosaur extinction.

My guess about Paleoworld is that, after the glut (pardon the
expression) of dinosaur programs following JP, people got "dino'ed out"
and the ratings fell. I guess Discovery decided to run what looked
juiciest from the produced episodes in the U.S. ("GIANT KILLER DINOS
BITING EACH OTHER'S HEADS OFF") and run the rest in the European feed
(where it's called Jurassic something-or-other), where people (pardon
this) tend to use their brains a bit more and thus are more interested
in "science programming" (ahem).

So Luis, you should be sending ME Paleoworld!

The four episodes to run during "Dinomania" in May might be the only
ones we'll see in North America all year. More details on each and on
the four-part Discovery series once they're closer to air time.

Larry
