Not true; even lions are capable of purring; the big cats can't purr 
continuously the 
way small cats can, but they can force out short purrs.  By the way, recent 
molecular 
evidence has led to drastic reevaluation of the feline family tree; many of the 
felines 
placed in the genus Felis apparently don't belong there.
