From the Dinosauria Translation and Pronunciation guide in the Omnipedia
at http://www.dinosauria.com:

Deinonychus Ostrom 1969 "terrible claw"
die-NON-i-kus (Gr. deinos "terrible" + Gr. onykh- (onyx) "claw" + -us) (m)
named for the large slashing claw on the second toe of its hindfoot. The
latinized-Greek type species name antirrhopus (an-TIHR-o-pus)
"counter-balancing" refers to its stiffened tail, used as a dynamic
stabilizer when attacking with the feet or when running. Theropoda
Coelurosauria Dromaeosauridae E. Cret. NA.
