Earth magazine - June issue
Earth magazine (June issue) again has some fascinating articles for dino
and science fans. Jeff Hecht writes about "Tilt a World" (pp. 34-37), which
proposes the theory that the "whole solid body of the planet, the crust
together with the underlying rocky mantle, once slipped ninety degrees
around Earth's iron core," and thus perhaps precipitated the Cambrian
explosion.
The cover article is "Through Dinosaur Eyes" by Karen J. Coates (pp.
25-31). Kent Stevens, a computer scientist, artificial intelligence and
human vision expert, studies the peripheral and binocular vision
capabilities of _Carcharodontosaurus_, _Tyrannosaurus rex_,
_Velociraptor_, and _Troodon_, as well as their visual resolution
abilities to gain more "insight" into how the dinosaurs may have
used their vision in their hunting styles.
Other articles are "Death in the Dunes" (p. 11) on the water-soaked
sand slides which may have killed some of the dinosaurs found in
the Gobi, and "Deep Impressions" by Daniel Pendick (p. 22), which
talks about the possible functions of the tubercles found on a New
Mexico duck-billed dinosaur's fossil skin (with picture).
