I would entertain the possibility of the predation of both as well as the
scavenging of both.  Mice can be scavenged by birds and deer (some
antelope) can be hunted by them.  Isn't there a species of bird raptor 
that can attack young deer weighing as much or more themselves, sometimes
even flying away with them?
