A question on inclusions

I have a question on publishing practice in paleontology:

When including a figure or diagram, such as a drawing of a fossil,
from another article into a paper or monograph:

        is it customary or necessary to request permission?

        if permission is needed, what is the best procedure
        for getting permission to use lots of figures? (as in
        a review article or monograph).
