In Evolution 50:2037-2048 (1996) Gatsey & Dial write on

      "From frond to fan: Archaeopteryx and the evolution of
             short-tailed birds."


  The assume Archaoepteryx was capable of flying and that the tail was
suited    to stabliszation rather than maneuverability.
