        Perhaps the best comparison between extinct dinos like maiasaurs 
and modern dinosaurs would be the passenger pigeon. If I recall, they 
nested in vast colonies on the open ground- protected from predators by 
their sheer numbers (passenger pigeons numbered in the billions).
        Some other points: the primitive condition among mammals is the 
altricial one- wildebeest that can get up and run with the herd are
advanced, rather than primitive. Primitive mammals were probably 
altricial.
