OTOH, perhaps the two evolved more or less simultaneously. It appears that this
would work in a snowball/avalance effect: more active lifestyle, requiring a
more efficent metabolism, which allows for an even more active lifestyle, etc,
etc, and so on, and so forth. The question of which evolved first is probably
the paleontological equivalent of, "which came first, the chicken or the egg?"
