Gamma rays are strongly absorbed by the atmosphere and probably wouldn't make
it to the earth's surface. (That's why we have to place gamma-ray telescopes
on orbiting spacecraft.) But they might heat up the air to uncomfortable
levels, causing devastating storms, etc. Any calculations available on how
much the air would be heated by the gamma-ray flux from a nearby supernova?
