new maniraptoran dino described in print
"A new crested maniropatoran dinosaur from the Santana Formation (Lower
Cretaceous) of Brazil", D.M. Martill, A.R.I. Cruickshank, E. Frey, P.G.
Small, & M. Clarke, Journal of the Geological Society, London, vol 153,
p. 5-8, 4 figs.
This paper, in the January 1996 issue of the Journal, just arrived. It
formally names a new dinosaur genus & species for all you who keep track
of such things. The basis is the almost complete skull belonging to the
Staatliches Museum fur Naturkunde Stuttgart (specimen SMNS 58022), which
was recently examined in England, including a CAT scan which had
interesting information on tooth growth. The etymology is given for the
names for those of you following that thread here as well.
Systematic information (from the paper)
order: Saurischia, Seeley, 1888
suborder: Theropoda, Marsh, 1881
Tetanurae, Gauthier, 1986
Maniraptora, Gauthier, 1986

felt (understated in print) when discovering that the snout had
been artificially elongated.

Arthur Conan-Doyle's "Lost World"
