This peculiar derivation stems from the discovery of the type skeleton in the
Wealden group; "weald" is Old English for "forest." Mantell originally stated
that he named it after the Tilgate Forest, but later changed his mind and
made the Wealden the eponym. The root "hylaeo-" later became a Greek root
"paleo shorthand" for the Wealden, and a few other Wealden reptiles were
given names formed from "hylaeo-."
