The reference may be to the fascinating Ashfall Fossil Beds in Nebraska,
where they've found quite a few rhinos, as well as a number of other types
(including, if I recall correctly, several early horses including
_Pliohippus_, a bird or two, and a number of large mammal species) buried
under volcanic ash.  An interesting aspect of the site is that the
researchers prefer to leave the uncovered skeletons in situ, and plan to
replace all of the bones which have been removed for study. Apparently, they
feel that the site is more interesting with everything left where it died.
