Pronunciation of Archaeopteryx
Archaeopteryx is an English word, not an ancient Greek word,
so it doesn't really matter if the upsilon in "pteryx" was long
or short; Webster indicates an accent on the syllable -op-.
For the record, the Greek word "pteryx" has a short upsilon.
If there had been a Greek word "archaiopteryx" the accent
probably would have fallen on the omicron. Greek was written
phonetically; if the "p" in "pteryx" had been silent it wouldn't
have been written.
