Presumably, slitted pupils like those of crocs and (some) cats permit a
very broad visual adaptability to differing light availability, i.e.,
cats hunt both by day and night; crocs hunt both beneath and above
water.

Most birds are either diurnal or nocturnal, and tend to stay put when not
in their own particular circadian activity-segments.  Eagles are diurnal
hunters; owls are nocturnal hunters.
