        I think you're comparing different levels here. While it's
true that birds have a wider range than mammals (because of the Arctic
tern and the Emperor penguin; I'm not counting south polar scientific
stations), no single species of bird has as wide a range as humans 
(the Arctic tern traverses a great deal of distance, but only to
get between its Arctic and Antarctic ranges) do.
