Deinonychus pronounciation
Since we're on the subject:
One personal pet peeve is the most common pronounciation of Deinonychus:
DIE-no-NYE-kus
However, the name breaks down as Dein (terrible) - onychus (claws), and it
should be pronounced
Dien-ON-i-kus
(which is how Ostrom pronounces it, anyway).
Unfortunately, most of the AMNH crew pronounce their own animal Mononykus as
Mon-o-NYE-kus
Ah, well, there are worse problems in the world than pronounciation...
Just my $0.02.
