I believe the Solzhenitsyn reference to prisoners eating ancient fish comes 
from the very beginning of the Gulag Archipelago, Volume 1, though my copy is 
at home too. Solzhenitsyn remarks, as I recall, that the novelty of the story 
must have caused the censors to let their guard down, thus allowing a rare 
official reference to the desperation of the prisoners.
