Distribution

Almost all chameleons live in Africa, with a whopping 40% living on the island of Madagascar. There are also chameleons species that live in Europe and Asia as well. They can be found in Spain, Palestine, Arabia, India and Sri Lanka.

Most African chameleons tend to inhabit the rain saturated jungles of the Congo basin, but their are a few resilient species that make a living in the Namib Desert. These species are particularly interesting as they have mostly forgone their arboreal ancestry and have taken to hunting on the ground.

Of the 128 or so distinct species of chameleons, none are found in the Americas or the "New World." A "new world" chameleon is actually an Anole (Anolis sp.)
