Sort of. Ornithomimids have long been considered to have had an omnivorous diet at best, with many portrayals showing them as small vertebrate / insect eaters.

That said, a recent study early this year (or late last year, depending on which version is cited) did suggest that ornithomimids, along with the majority of coelurosaurs, were actually herbivores (Zanno and Makovicky 2011) . So maybe JP didn't err too far off the mark after all.

Zanno, L.E., Makovicky, P.J. 2011. Herbivorous Ecomorphology and Specialization Patterns in Theropod Dinosaur Evolution. PNAS. Vol.108(1):232-237.

Actually you're slightly in error when you say that "there was never a scene in the JP movies where a theropod attacked a plant eater". There was such a scene; the stampeding Gallimimus herd was ambushed by a T-rex and it killed, and ate, one of them.
